Korean Hair Salon Phrases: How to Ask for a Haircut You Actually Want
Korean hair salon phrases: get the haircut you want

Ordering a coffee in another language feels manageable. Explaining how much hair you want cut can feel considerably more serious. If you accidentally order the wrong drink, you can try something different tomorrow. A haircut takes a little longer to undo.

The good news is that you do not need an impressive Korean vocabulary to explain a simple haircut. A few short sentences, a reference photo, and a clear agreement about length will take you much further than memorizing a long list of styling terms.

This guide follows a visit from asking for an appointment to checking the finished cut. You can save the phrases on your phone and show them to the stylist if speaking feels difficult.

1. Ask whether you need an appointment

Look for 미용실, which means a hair salon. Booking arrangements vary, so do not assume that every salon accepts walk-ins or that you can always reserve through the same app. If you are nearby, you can simply step in and ask.

Korean English meaning
지금 커트 가능해요? Can I get a haircut now?
예약해야 하나요? Do I need an appointment?
오늘 오후에 예약할 수 있어요? Can I book for this afternoon?
얼마나 기다려야 해요? How long would I need to wait?
커트만 하고 싶어요. I only want a haircut.

You may hear 예약하셨어요?, meaning “Do you have an appointment?” If you do, answer 네, 예약했어요 and show the booking details. If you do not, 아니요, 예약 안 했어요 means “No, I haven't booked.”

For a booking, confirm the date, time, and service. A photo of the appointment details is more useful than relying on a time you only partly understood. If you are visiting before a train or flight, mention when you need to leave rather than assuming the salon can finish quickly.

2. Confirm the service and total price before starting

On a menu, 커트 means a haircut, 염색 means coloring, and 펌 means a perm. 샴푸 refers to washing the hair. You may also see 드라이 for a blow-dry or styling service; ask what the listed option includes.

Prices and inclusions depend on the salon and the service. Instead of guessing whether washing or styling is included, ask directly.

Korean English meaning
커트는 얼마예요? How much is a haircut?
샴푸도 포함인가요? Is a hair wash included?
추가 요금이 있나요? Are there any additional charges?
전체 금액이 얼마예요? What is the total price?
얼마나 걸려요? How long will it take?

If the stylist suggests an extra service that you do not want, 오늘은 커트만 할게요 means “I'll just have a haircut today.” It is polite and clear. You do not need to give a long explanation.

For coloring or a perm, have a proper consultation about the result, the condition of your hair, the time required, and the total cost. This basic phrase guide is not a substitute for making sure both sides understand a more complicated treatment.

3. Show a photo, then say what you like about it

A photo is helpful, but two people can notice different things in the same picture. You might like the length while the stylist assumes you want the layers or fringe as well.

Start with 이 사진처럼 하고 싶어요, meaning “I'd like something like this photo.” Then point to the part that matters most.

Korean English meaning
길이는 지금처럼 유지하고 싶어요. I'd like to keep my current length.
끝만 조금 다듬어 주세요. Please just trim the ends a little.
앞머리는 자르지 말아 주세요. Please don't cut my bangs.
옆머리만 조금 짧게 해 주세요. Please make just the sides a little shorter.
너무 짧게 자르지 말아 주세요. Please don't cut it too short.

The useful word 앞머리 means bangs or a fringe. 옆머리 is the hair at the sides, and 뒷머리 is the hair at the back. You do not need to use all three. Pointing while saying one short sentence can be much clearer than trying to describe an entire hairstyle at once.

If keeping enough length for a ponytail matters, say 묶을 수 있는 길이는 남겨 주세요: “Please leave enough length to tie it back.” That gives the stylist a practical requirement, not just a vague preference.

At a Korean hair salon: a four-panel comic showing how to ask for a haircut now, ask to trim just the ends, ask not to cut the bangs, and ask for the total price, with Korean phrases and English translations

4. Agree on the length before the scissors start

“A little” is convenient, but it is not a measurement. Your idea of a small trim might be quite different from someone else's.

2센티미터 정도 잘라 주세요 means “Please cut off about two centimeters.” You can also point to where you want the hair to end and say 이 정도 길이로 해 주세요, meaning “Please make it about this length.”

Be careful about the difference: the first sentence describes how much to remove; the second describes the finished length you are indicating. A number written on your phone can help, but still show the stylist what you mean.

Before cutting, the stylist might hold a section of hair and ask 이 정도 괜찮으세요? — “Is this amount/length okay?” Take a moment to look. If it is more than you wanted, say 그것보다 조금만 덜 잘라 주세요: “Please cut a little less than that.”

It is easier to clarify now than after a large section has been cut. Asking for confirmation is not being difficult; it helps both of you work toward the same result.

5. Speak up during the wash and haircut

Short comments are useful throughout the visit. You do not have to sit through uncomfortable water or stay silent if you notice something you did not agree to.

Korean English meaning
물이 조금 뜨거워요. The water is a little hot.
물이 조금 차가워요. The water is a little cold.
잠깐만요. One moment, please.
조금만 더 길게 남겨 주세요. Please leave it a little longer.
한국어를 잘 못해요. 천천히 말씀해 주세요. I don't speak Korean well. Please speak slowly.

If a translation app is easier, ask 번역기로 보여드려도 될까요? — “May I show you using a translation app?” Use short, concrete sentences in the app. “Keep the length. Trim the ends. Do not cut the fringe” is easier to check than a complicated paragraph about the feeling you want.

You may hear 숱을 좀 쳐드릴까요?, asking whether you want some of the bulk thinned out. If you are unsure, ask the stylist to explain or show you before agreeing. A polite 네 can sound like permission, even when you only mean that you heard the question.

6. Check the result and ask about styling

When the stylist shows you the back with a mirror, look at the sides and the overall length as well. If you want a small adjustment, describe the specific area.

이쪽을 조금만 더 다듬어 주세요 means “Please tidy this side a little more.” If you are happy, 좋아요, 감사합니다 means “I like it, thank you.”

It can also be worth asking 집에서는 어떻게 말리면 돼요? — “How should I dry it at home?” A hairstyle that looks great after professional styling may need a technique you have not used before. Ask the stylist to demonstrate the direction of the dryer or how to arrange the fringe.

If a product is offered and you do not want to buy it, 오늘은 제품은 안 살게요 means “I won't buy any products today.” At payment, 영수증 주세요 means “A receipt, please.” Check the total against what you agreed before the service began.

7. A simple conversation to practice

The following is an example, not a script every salon will follow.

You: 지금 커트 가능해요?
Can I get a haircut now?

Stylist: 네. 어떻게 해드릴까요?
Yes. How would you like it?

You: 끝만 조금 다듬어 주세요. 2센티미터 정도요.
Please just trim the ends. About two centimeters.

You: 앞머리는 자르지 말아 주세요.
Please don't cut my bangs.

You: 샴푸도 포함인가요? 전체 금액이 얼마예요?
Is a wash included? What is the total price?

Stylist: 이 정도 괜찮으세요?
Is this amount okay?

You: 네, 좋아요.
Yes, that's good.

The most useful preparation is not memorizing every sentence. Choose your reference photo, decide what must stay unchanged, and save two or three phrases you can show on your phone. Being clear about what you do not want can be just as helpful as describing what you do want.
