Korean Café Phrases: What to Say, What Staff Ask, and How to Answer
Korean café phrases: order with confidence

You know which coffee you want. You point at the menu and place your order. Then the barista asks a question, and suddenly you are not sure what to say.

Perhaps they want to know whether the drink should be hot or iced. Perhaps they are asking whether you will stay or take it away. You do not need a long Korean conversation to answer either question.

This guide focuses on short phrases you can use or show on your phone. The dialogues are practice examples; an actual café may ask things in a different order.

1. Start with the drink and the number

A useful pattern is [drink] 한 잔 주세요, meaning “One [drink], please.” For two drinks, use 두 잔 주세요.

What you want Korean to say or show
One iced Americano, please. 아이스 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요.
One hot latte, please. 따뜻한 카페라테 한 잔 주세요.
Two iced Americanos, please. 아이스 아메리카노 두 잔 주세요.
One of this, please. 이거 하나 주세요.
What do you recommend? 어떤 메뉴를 추천하세요?

The pointing phrase is useful for an unfamiliar drink or dessert. Make sure staff can see the exact item you mean, especially if several options have similar names.

주세요 is a practical polite ending for these requests. You do not need to build a complicated sentence just to order a drink.

2. Recognize the hot-or-iced question

You might hear 아이스로 드릴까요? (“Would you like it iced?”) or 따뜻한 걸로 드릴까요? (“Would you like it hot?”).

Instead of answering only “yes,” repeat the option you want. That helps if you did not catch every word.

Your answer Meaning
아이스로 주세요. Iced, please.
따뜻하게 주세요. Hot, please.
차가운 음료인가요? Is this a cold drink?
따뜻한 것도 있나요? Is a hot version available too?

Not every drink has both versions. If an option is unavailable, choose another menu item rather than assuming the café can change the recipe.

On a screen, you may see 아이스 / ICE and 핫 / HOT. Check the selected option before confirming, not just the photograph.

3. Say whether you are staying or taking it away

Another question is 드시고 가세요? or 매장에서 드시나요?—both ask whether you will have it in the café. 포장이세요? asks whether it is takeaway.

What you mean Korean
I will have it here. 여기서 먹고 갈게요.
I will take it away. 포장해 주세요.
This one is for here; that one is takeaway. 이건 매장에서 먹고, 저건 포장할게요.

Say this before the drinks are prepared when possible. Do not assume the same cup or serving arrangement will be used for both choices.

At a kiosk, look for 매장 for eating or drinking inside and 포장 for takeaway. This choice is separate from selecting the drink itself.

At a Korean café: a four-panel comic showing how to order one Americano, ask for it iced, say you will have it here, and pay by card, with Korean phrases and English translations

4. Check size, sweetness, and available changes

Size names differ between cafés. If the menu uses unfamiliar names, you can point or ask for the smallest or largest available size.

Request or question Korean
The smallest size, please. 가장 작은 사이즈로 주세요.
The largest size, please. 가장 큰 사이즈로 주세요.
Is this sweet? 이거 단가요?
Can you make it less sweet? 덜 달게 해주실 수 있나요?
No added syrup, please. 시럽은 넣지 말아주세요.
Less ice, please. 얼음은 조금만 넣어주세요.
Is decaf available? 디카페인으로 가능한가요?
Is there an extra charge? 추가 요금이 있나요?

These are requests, not guarantees. A premixed drink may not allow a sweetness adjustment. Asking for no syrup also does not mean every other ingredient is unsweetened.

If you are asking about a milk alternative, be specific: 오트밀크로 바꿀 수 있나요? means “Can you change it to oat milk?” Check availability and any extra charge.

If an ingredient is important because of an allergy, tell staff explicitly and ask whether they can accommodate it. A menu name or a simple substitution request does not establish everything about the ingredients or preparation.

5. Understand the small questions at checkout

After choosing the drink, you may be asked something unrelated to the menu. For example, staff might ask about loyalty points or a receipt.

What staff may say Meaning A useful reply
적립하시겠어요? Would you like to collect points? 괜찮아요. — No, thank you.
영수증 필요하세요? Do you need a receipt? 네, 주세요. — Yes, please.
카드 꽂아주세요. Please insert your card. Follow the terminal instructions.
잠시만 기다려주세요. Please wait a moment. 네. — Okay.

To say you will pay by card, use 카드로 결제할게요. Do not assume every terminal accepts your overseas card or preferred phone-payment service; ask about another method if payment fails.

If the amount looks different from what you expected, ask 총 얼마인가요? (“How much is the total?”) and check the items and options before paying again.

6. Collect the right order

Depending on the café, you may receive a buzzer, an order number, or instructions to listen for your drink. Keep whichever identifier you are given.

진동벨 means a buzzer. 주문번호 means an order number. 픽업 marks pickup, while 반납 indicates returning something, such as a tray.

If you are unsure at the counter, point to the drink and ask:

이거 제 주문인가요?
Is this my order?

If you were expecting something else, explain politely:

아이스로 주문했는데 확인해 주실 수 있나요?
I ordered it iced. Could you check?

Check before drinking from a cup that might belong to another customer. When you finish, follow the café’s tray and cup return instructions.

7. A short practice conversation

Here is an example you can read before entering a café.

You: 아이스 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요.
One iced Americano, please.

Staff: 드시고 가세요?
Will you have it here?

You: 아니요, 포장해 주세요.
No, takeaway, please.

Staff: 영수증 필요하세요?
Do you need a receipt?

You: 네, 주세요.
Yes, please.

Staff: 잠시만 기다려주세요.
Please wait a moment.

You: 감사합니다.
Thank you.

That is enough for a complete, simple order. You do not need to add extra phrases just to sound more fluent.

8. Save these phrases for a moment when you get stuck

Situation Korean to show
You did not understand. 죄송하지만 다시 말씀해 주시겠어요?
You need slower speech. 조금 천천히 말씀해 주세요.
You need help with a kiosk. 주문하는 것을 도와주실 수 있나요?
You want to point to an item. 이거 하나 주세요.
You want to say thanks. 감사합니다.

The first means “Sorry, could you say that again?” You do not have to pretend you understood and hope the right drink appears.

For a first visit, concentrate on four choices: the drink, hot or iced, the size if needed, and for here or takeaway. Once those are clear, the conversation becomes much easier to follow.
