Naver Map made easy: find your way around Korea

You have saved a restaurant from a video, copied its English name, and opened a map. Several results appear. One is in another city, another seems to be a different branch, and you are not sure which one the video showed.

This is a useful moment to slow down. Getting around Korea becomes easier when you can confirm the right place, choose a sensible route, and recognize the entrance when you arrive.

Naver Map can help with those steps. It offers multilingual maps, public transport directions, street view, and saved places. You do not need to learn every feature before using it. Start with one destination and work through the journey from search to arrival.

1. Set the app to English first

Install the official NAVER Maps, Navigation app and check that the developer is NAVER Corp.

For language settings, Naver provides these routes:

  • Android: MY/profile icon → settings gear → Language → English.
  • iPhone: use the app's Language setting to reach the device's language setting for Naver Map, then choose English.

If the iPhone language option is missing, add English under the phone's General → Language & Region settings first.

Do not worry if a menu looks slightly different after an update. Look for the profile icon, settings gear, and language option. You may still encounter Korean in business notices, images, or reviews, so keep the original place name and address handy.

For location-based directions, allow the app to access your location when you want to use that feature. If you enter the starting point yourself, check that it is the place you actually intend to leave from.

2. Search for the exact place, not just a similar name

Start with the name you have. If the English search gives unclear results, copy the Korean name or street address from the business's own page, booking confirmation, or original recommendation.

Avoid translating a business name word by word. A literal translation may not match the name used on the map. Copying the original Korean text is often a better next step than guessing a different English spelling.

Before choosing a result, compare three things:

Check What you are trying to confirm
Area Is it in the city and neighborhood you intended?
Address or branch Is it the correct location, rather than another branch?
Photos Does the storefront or building match your reference?

Branch names may contain 점, a character often used at the end of a branch name. 본점 usually means the main branch. These are clues to check, not reasons to assume every listing with a similar name is connected.

If you only know the building address, search that first. Then use the business information to confirm the floor and entrance. A correct building pin does not necessarily identify the exact door you need.

3. Choose a route that fits your day

Open the place listing, find Directions/길찾기, and check the starting point and destination. Select walking or public transport according to how you intend to travel.

Do not choose a route solely because it has the smallest number of minutes. Open the details and compare the walking sections, transfers, and final approach to the destination. The route details break the trip into its individual sections, so you can see where each walk, ride, and transfer happens.

For example, imagine one option takes 34 minutes with two transfers, while another takes 41 minutes with none. The first may suit someone in a hurry. The second may feel easier if you have luggage or are still learning the transport system. This is a planning example, not a live route.

Treat the displayed duration as an estimate. Journey times account for travel, walking, and waiting, but actual times can differ. Leave room for finding the stop or station entrance, especially before an appointment.

4. For buses and subways, check the direction

For a bus journey, note the bus number, boarding stop, direction, and stop where you need to get off. The same bus number alone is not enough to confirm that you are waiting on the correct side of the road.

Real-time bus information can be checked through bus-number searches, stop icons, and route results. Use the information for your specific stop, then compare it with the sign where you are standing.

For a subway journey, check the line and the direction shown on the platform. Compare the next station or destination on the signs with the route you selected. If something does not match, pause before boarding.

Also note the recommended exit at your destination. Choosing the wrong exit can add unnecessary walking even after you have reached the correct station.

On supported city routes containing buses or subways, you can open the route details and select Start guidance/안내시작. This feature is not offered for every kind of route.

Before a late return trip, check your options again. A route you viewed in the afternoon is not a guarantee that the same connection will still be available at night.

5. Use the last few minutes to find the entrance

The route may bring you to the right building while the restaurant is upstairs, around the corner, or accessed from a smaller street.

Look for floor information in the address. 2층 means the second floor, and 지하 1층 means the first basement level. Compare the building number and storefront photos before deciding that the map sent you to the wrong place.

Street view can help you recognize the area before arrival. Select an available street-view location near your destination and look around. Treat the images as an orientation aid, since the current storefront or access route may have changed.

If the location marker seems confusing, stop somewhere safe and compare your surroundings with the street names and visible buildings. Do not cross a road or enter a restricted area just because a line on the screen appears to point that way.

6. Check opening hours before you travel

Finding the right restaurant is only half the job. You also want to arrive when it can serve you.

Look at its listed hours and then check for a recent notice. Pay attention to these expressions:

Korean Meaning
영업시간 Opening hours
정기휴무 Regular closing day
임시휴무 Temporary closure
브레이크타임 Break between service periods
라스트오더 Last order
예약 Reservation
포장 Takeout

For example, a restaurant that closes at 9 p.m. might stop taking orders earlier. A business that serves lunch and dinner may also have a break between the two.

If the visit matters enough to justify a long journey, contact the business to confirm your exact date and time. Holiday hours and temporary changes deserve an extra check. A recent announcement is more useful for that question than an old review saying the restaurant was open late.

7. Save your accommodation before exploring

It is easy to focus on places you want to visit and forget the one place you need to return to.

Save your accommodation in the app's saved-place or bookmark feature. If the app asks you to sign in for saving or syncing, follow that process if you want to use it. Saved places can also be shared with others, which is handy when travelling with friends.

Keep a separate copy of the Korean address in your phone's notes, too. Add the building name and any entrance instructions from your host or booking confirmation. Avoid relying only on a nickname such as "our hotel."

You can also take a screenshot of the final walking section. It is a backup reference, not a replacement for live route information. Prepare a reliable internet connection for searches and updates, and do not assume that every screen you opened earlier will remain available offline.

8. A simple example: from a restaurant video to the correct table

Imagine you have found a noodle restaurant in a short video. The video gives an English name, but you cannot immediately identify the right result.

First, check the caption or the restaurant's own page for its Korean name and address. Paste the original text into Naver Map. Compare the neighborhood and storefront with the video before saving anything.

Next, look at the opening hours. If you plan to arrive at 3 p.m., check whether that falls inside a break. Adjust the plan before calculating your journey.

Then compare the available routes. Choose one you can follow comfortably and note the station exit or bus stop. When you arrive nearby, check the floor, building number, and entrance rather than walking in circles around the pin.

That small routine is useful well beyond restaurants. You can apply it to a meeting location, a repair shop, or a pickup point. The key is to confirm the place before navigating to it.

9. Useful messages when you need help

If you are close but unsure, show the address together with one of these short messages:

What you want to ask Korean message
Is this the right address? 이 주소가 맞나요?
Where is the entrance? 입구가 어디인가요?
Which floor is it on? 몇 층에 있나요?
Does this bus stop here? 이 버스가 여기 서나요?
Does this bus go to this place? 이 버스가 이곳에 가나요?
Are you open today? 오늘 영업하나요?

Show the destination or bus number along with the sentence. "Does this bus go here?" is much easier to answer when the other person can see what "here" means.

Before leaving, check the right branch, the current opening hours, and the return route. Once those become habits, a map app stops feeling like another complicated thing to learn and starts making the day easier.
