Chuseok 2026 in Korea: What's Open, What Closes, and What to Check
Chuseok 2026 runs from September 24 to 26. A practical guide to checking whether restaurants, shops, attractions, transport, and online orders will still work — including the short Korean holiday notices you will see and the messages to send before you head out.

You have a restaurant saved, a day trip planned, and something you need to order online. Then a notice appears: "추석 휴무."
If you are spending Chuseok in Korea for the first time, the difficult part may not be understanding the holiday. It may be finding out whether your plans will still work.
Chuseok is a major Korean holiday associated with family gatherings and the harvest season. In 2026, Chuseok Day falls on Friday, September 25, and the official Chuseok holiday period is Thursday, September 24, through Saturday, September 26. Sunday, September 27, follows immediately afterward.
You do not need to cancel your plans. You do need to check the specific places and services you intend to use.
Start with the date you actually plan to visit
"Open during Chuseok" can be an unclear answer. A business might open on one holiday date and close on another, or accept customers for fewer hours.
Instead of asking only whether a place opens during the holiday, ask about your exact date and time:
9월 25일 오후 1시에 영업하나요?
Are you open at 1 p.m. on September 25?
If you are visiting on a different day, change the date in the sentence. You can show the message on your phone or paste it into a business's messaging service.
For a restaurant, also check the last order time. For an attraction, check the last admission time. Knowing when the doors close is not always enough to know whether you can still enter or order.
Restaurants and shops: confirm the branch, not just the brand
Some restaurants, department stores, and shopping malls close on Chuseok Day or during part of the holiday. Convenience stores and shops around tourist attractions often remain open, but opening hours vary.
For your own plans, treat an "open" label as a starting point. Open the individual store listing and look for a dated holiday notice. Check that the notice is for 2026 and for the correct branch.
A useful checking order is:
- Find the exact branch on a Korean map app.
- Look for a recent notice, announcement, or photograph of its holiday hours.
- Check the business's own website or social account if the listing is unclear.
- Contact the business before making a long journey.
You can search the business name together with 추석 영업시간, meaning "Chuseok opening hours." If several results appear, check the year before using any of them.
For a meal you are particularly looking forward to, save a second option nearby. A backup ten minutes away is more useful than a completely different restaurant across the city.
Read the short Korean notices without guessing
Holiday notices often contain only a few words and a date range. These are useful expressions to recognize:
| Korean notice | Meaning | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| 추석 휴무 | Closed for Chuseok | The exact closure dates |
| 추석 당일 휴무 | Closed on Chuseok Day | In 2026, this means September 25 |
| 정상 영업 | Open as usual | The normal hours for that branch |
| 단축 영업 | Reduced opening hours | The revised opening and closing times |
| 임시 휴무 | Temporary closure | The reopening date |
| 영업 재개 | Business resumes | The date and time service returns |
| 라스트 오더 | Last order | The latest time you can order food |
| 입장 마감 | Last admission | The latest time you can enter |
For example, imagine a shop posts: "9/24~9/26 휴무, 9/27 정상 영업." This says it is closed from September 24 through September 26 and opens as usual on September 27. This is a reading example, not the schedule of a particular shop.
If the notice is an image, use an image translation tool. Keep the original visible while checking the translation, especially the dates. A mistaken number can change your entire plan.
Can you still use public transportation?
Yes. City buses and subways continue operating during the holiday. Intercity train and express bus tickets can sell out quickly because of holiday travel demand.
For a trip within a city, check the route for the actual day you are travelling. If you plan to return late, look up the final departure rather than relying on a journey time you saved earlier.
For an intercity trip, check both directions before making other bookings. Finding an outbound ticket does not solve the problem if you cannot return when you need to.
If your preferred departure is unavailable, consider these options:
- Check another departure time that still fits your accommodation plans.
- Compare a direct bus route with the train journey.
- Move the trip to another date if your schedule allows.
- Choose a local outing that does not depend on a scarce intercity ticket.
Before accepting an alternative station or terminal, check its location. A cheaper or available ticket is less useful if it leaves you far from where you need to go. Also check cancellation conditions before holding several bookings.
Attractions: an open holiday event does not mean every building is open
Holiday cultural activities and free-admission opportunities are common around Chuseok. At the same time, some museums close on Chuseok Day. Check the attraction's own holiday announcement before setting out.
A useful way to plan a day is to choose one confirmed attraction and build the rest of the outing around it. Add a nearby meal, a short walk, and an indoor alternative if the weather changes.
When reading an event page, separate these questions:
- Is the site itself open on my date?
- Is the particular event running at the time I will arrive?
- Does the event require a reservation or separate ticket?
- Does free admission cover the activity I want to join?
This avoids a common planning mistake: seeing a holiday promotion and assuming every part of the venue follows the same rules.
Online shopping: "shipping resumes" is not an arrival date
Before ordering something you need during the holiday, look for the seller's shipping notice. Do this before paying, especially if you are leaving your accommodation soon afterward.
The most useful words are:
| Korean expression | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| 주문 마감 | Order cutoff |
| 출고 마감 | Final dispatch cutoff |
| 배송 지연 | Delivery delay |
| 출고 재개 | Dispatch resumes |
| 순차 발송 | Orders will be dispatched in sequence |
| 도착 예정 | Expected arrival |
출고 means dispatch: the item leaves the seller's handling process. It does not mean the parcel has reached your door.
For example, a notice saying orders will be dispatched after the holiday is not a promise that your order will arrive on the first day after the holiday. Look for an arrival estimate and ask the seller if you have a firm deadline.
Do not apply one seller's notice to every delivery service. Check the item, seller, delivery method, and address involved in your own order. If you need something immediately, checking local availability may be simpler than relying on an uncertain arrival date.
Handle essential errands separately from sightseeing
Public office counters and bank branches generally close on public holidays. If you need an in-person service, check the relevant office's calendar rather than assuming a holiday weekday follows its normal schedule.
Make a short list of errands that matter to you: collecting a document, asking a bank a question, receiving a parcel, or speaking to your building manager.
For each one, decide whether you can complete it before the holiday, use a suitable online service, or wait until a confirmed reopening date. If there is a deadline, verify it with the service handling your case.
Visitors can ask their accommodation about practical arrangements, too. If a parcel might arrive while you are out, ask whether someone can receive it and how it will be stored. Do not assume reception will accept every delivery.
Keep these messages on your phone
You do not need a long conversation to confirm a simple plan. These short messages can help:
| What you want to ask | Korean message |
|---|---|
| Are you open during Chuseok? | 추석 연휴에도 영업하나요? |
| Are you open on September 25? | 9월 25일에도 영업하나요? |
| What time is the last order? | 마지막 주문은 몇 시까지 가능한가요? |
| Do I need a reservation? | 예약이 필요한가요? |
| When do you reopen? | 언제 다시 영업하나요? |
| When will this order be dispatched? | 이 주문은 언제 출고되나요? |
For opening hours, include your intended date whenever possible. For an order, include the order number through the seller's appropriate support channel. Giving the other person the detail they need usually leads to a more useful answer.
Before heading out, save the destination address, check the latest notice, and choose one backup nearby. With those small preparations, you can spend less of the holiday reading unexpected closure signs and more of it enjoying your time in Korea.
